Black Friday Fusion Tip - Dark Mode

Users have asked for a dark theme in Fusion for a long time. That bright white background can strain the eyes during long design sessions.

This guide shows you how to switch on dark mode in Fusion. You'll learn to tweak themes for better comfort on your eyes.

Also, check out the new 16-part Fusion getting started series on Autodesk's YouTube channel. It teaches sketching, modeling, drawings, manufacturing, and more by building a fishing reel. Click here to see that series.

Navigating Fusion Theme Preferences

Accessing the Preference Settings Menu

Click the profile icon in the top right of Fusion. Select "Preferences" from the drop-down menu. Click on the "General" tab on the left of the dialog, if needed. Look for the "Theme" setting.

Understanding Existing Theme Options: Classic vs. Light Gray

Fusion also have different theme options, Classic and Light Gray. Fusion Classic uses darker icons and filled folders. Folders look shaded and full. Light Gray brightens those elements. Icons soften for a cleaner look. Folders lighten up—less contrast overall.

Activating the Desired Dark Mode

Choose "Dark Blue" from the theme list. Hit "Apply" and watch the change. The top menu turns deep blue. The workspace background goes dark too. No restart needed—switch happens live.

Visual Workflow Changes in Dark Mode

Sketching and Geometry Color Adjustments

Start a new sketch in dark mode. Fully constrained lines turn white, not black. This stands out better on the dark canvas. Add a dimension. It shows in green hues now. Black text would vanish—green keeps it readable.

Seamless Integration: Matching Device Theme Settings

How "Match Device Theme" Functions

Pick "Match Device Theme" in preferences. Fusion checks your computer's OS setting and it swaps to dark or light to match.

On Windows, open Settings > Personalization > Colors. See "Choose your mode." Apply the change. Fusion shifts instantly. No manual picks each time.

Cross-Platform Consistency for Multi-Device Users

Run Fusion on a shop PC in light mode? It stays light there. Dark mode on your work PC? Fusion will be in Dark Mode.

Customizing the Display Environment Backgrounds

Exploring Alternative Dark and Light Backgrounds

Go to "Display" settings after themes. Find "Environment" under the canvas options. Default is "Theme"—it ties to your UI choice.

Try "Dark Sky." Canvas turns moody gray—good for metal parts. "Gray Room" adds subtle tones. "Photo Booth" stays white classic. "Tranquility Blue" calms with soft blues. "Infinity Pool" brightens for vibrant renders. "River Rubicon" is my favorite. Each shifts how the models look against the background. Pick your favorite.

Conclusion: Finalizing Your Fusion Aesthetic

Dark mode in Fusion is easy to enable. Just hit preferences and pick Dark Blue or Match Device Theme. You'll cut eye strain and work longer.
